授業目標

By taking this course, you will:
1. gain comprehensive understandings about the relationship between language and colonialism
2. Identify research questions relevant to the discipline and explain why they are important
2. Critically read and evaluate published research exploring the relationship between language and colonialism.
3. Apply knowledge gained from prior research to propose an original research project

授業の概要

This course is designed for graduate students who are interested in the relationship between language and colonialism. Students will learn about how prepare for writing a sociolinguistics-oriented research. Students will learn about deals with a range of methods for conducting sociolinguistics-oriented research, ranged from interviews to ethnography.

This course comprises mainly of a series of student presentations; summary by the instructor and discussion will be followed. Students are highly encouraged to discuss various topics and to carry out research for their final paper using one of the methods they learnt.

成績評価

Final paper: 40%
Research proposal (literature review or original research): 20%
Final paper presentation: 20%
In-class presentation: 10%
Attendance & discussion: 10%
